It is time to register for Shekinah 2017, the Metro DC Synod Youth weekend retreat for confirmation age youth. This year’s retreat will be March 17-19 and is again being held at the 4H Center in Front Royal, VA. Shekinah provides opportunities for learning, growing in faith, worshipping, meeting new people and renewing old friendships – and having fun with other youth just like themselves outside of their home congregation.
Through Large, Small, and E-(xperiential) Group sessions, Shekinah provides opportunities
for learning, growing in faith, worshipping, meeting new people and renewing old friendships – and having fun with other youth just like themselves outside of their home congregation.
Our theme this year – Sola Gratia – invites us to explore what it means to live in God’s grace – grace that comes with no strings attached, no fine print, and no questions asked. In small and large group meetings we will look at what grace is, how grace affects us, and at some specific examples of grace.
There are links below for an overview letter, a flyer to post in your church and the necessary registration forms. The registration deadline is February 15th. Late registrations will be accepted, on a space available basis, at a higher registration fee until March 1st.
The following documents are available here:
Letter to Parents & Youth
Youth Registration Form
Adult Registration Form
Congregation Registration Form
Use the flyer to help publicize the event (fill in the information for your congregation). Make as many copies as you need of the youth and adult registration forms for the youth and adults in your congregation. Congregation Leaders are responsible for checking to see that individual registration forms are signed by the participant (and, for youth, by a parent) and that they contain medical insurance information – please ensure that they are complete before mailing them in to the Registrar.
Please note the following:
- The event is open to youth currently in 7th and 8th grades; exceptions are available for 6th and 9th graders who are fully integrated into your Confirmation ministry.
- The event cost is $125 per participant. If youth in your congregation have financial needs that your congregation cannot fully cover, financial assistance may be available to assist with up to 1/3 of the cost. Please contact Barbara Harner (contact info below) by January 30 for information / application form.
- Make checks payable to: Metro Washington, DC Synod – Shekinah 2017. Please do not mail checks to the Synod Office. One check per congregation is appreciated.
- The registration deadline is February 15, 2017. Late registrations will be accepted, on a space available basis, at a higher registration fee ($150) until March 1.
- Registration is on a first-come, first-registered basis. Once capacity is reached, registration will close.
The Congregation form, registration forms for each youth and adult advisor and payment should be mailed to:
John Stoner, Registrar
738 Vermillion Drive
Leesburg, VA 20176
NOTE: You can submit a completed Congregation Registration Form by email attachment (Congregation name, adult contact information, participant name, grade, gender and t-shirt size) to meet the Registration deadline. Hard copies of all Registration Forms – Congregation, Youth and Adult – and payment must be received by March 1; there will be no refunds after this date. Requests for additions after March 1 must be confirmed in writing with the Registrar based on space availability. There are no on-site registrations.
This weekend is all about helping participants grow in their faith. Because we know faith is formed by the power of the Holy Spirit through personal trusted relationships with affirming, available and authentic adults, everyone will be assigned to a Small Group, consisting of 8-10 youth and 2 adults. Event evaluations consistently name the SG experience as the most powerful aspect of the weekend. Adults will be paired to serve as co-facilitators. Please indicate on your registration form how comfortable you are with facilitating so we can pair you up accordingly.
Reminder: All adults attending must have a Background Check on file with the synod office. If needed, please download the form. Complete the form and send it in to the synod office. Note that there will be a processing charge. If you have any questions, please contact Katharyn Wheeler in the Synod office by phone (202-417-3678) or email (email@example.com).
Offering: There will be an offering taken at worship Saturday evening. This year, our offering
will help support Outdoor Ministries – specifically our two local Lutheran camps, Mar-Lu-Ridge and Caroline Furnace. Camps are amazing examples of God’s grace, offering a wide variety of programs that provide growth experiences for people of all ages, many of whom become leaders in the church and their communities.
